About the episode
ESC 2023 — We are joined onsite by Dr Duk-Woo Park and Dr Do-Yoon Kang (Asan Medical Center, Seoul, KR) to discuss the findings from the OCTIVUS study (NCT03394079).
The OCTIVUS study (Seung-Jung Park, CardioVascular Research Foundation, Korea) aims to compare the clinical safety and efficacy of optimal coherence tomography (OCT) guided and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) guided strategies in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients receiving percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DES) or drug-coated balloons (DCB). 2008 patients were enrolled in the trial, and were randomized to receive either the experimental OCT-guided PCI, or IVUS-Guided PCI.
Results show that OCT-guided PCI was non-inferior to IVUS-guided PCI in regard to target-vessel failure at one year.
Questions:
- What is the unmet need you are trying to address with this study?
- What was the patient population and study design?
- What are the key findings?
- How should these findings impact clinical practice?
- What questions have arisen from this trial?
Recorded on-site at ESC Congress 2023, Amsterdam.

Duk-Woo Park
Professor of Medicine
Prof Duk-Woo Park is Professor in the Cardiovascular Medicine Division at Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, and an Instructor in Medicine at the University of Ulsan College of Medicine.
Prof Park has a particular interest in revascularization strategy (PCI vs. CABG for multivessel and left main disease), antiplatelet/antithrombotic strategey, transcatheter valve interventions (TAVR), major clinical trials or registries studies (drugs, stents, revascularization strategy), biomarkers, and medical statistics.
Do-Yoon Kang
Assistant Professor
Dr Do-Yoon Kang is an Assistant Professor of Interventional Cardiology at Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea. He received his medical degree from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, where he completed internship and residency in internal medicine. He completed his fellowship in interventional cardiology at Asan Medical Center.
Dr Kang's area of clinical expertise is complex PCI and transcatheter valve intervention. So far he has published and co-authored approximately 60 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. His research interests include the optimization of the PCI with imaging & physiology, and transcatheter valve intervention.
