Dr. Giannitsis, an Assistant Professor of Medicine based in Heidelberg, holds a medical degree from the University of Homburg. He pursued advanced training in internal medicine and cardiology at Lübeck University Hospital in Germany. Additionally, he completed a Ph.D. in internal medicine before assuming his current role in 2002.
Dr. Giannitsis's research is centered on cardiac biomarkers, specifically troponins, and their use in diagnosing coronary syndromes. He also specializes in cardiac MR imaging. Notably, he has served as the Principal National Coordinator in numerous clinical trials, including the PLATO trial, ATLAS-TIMI 46, and ATLAS-TIMI 51 trials.
He is an active member of various professional societies, prominently the European Society of Cardiology. Dr. Giannitsis's contributions extend to his role as a former program committee member for the ESC from 2010 to 2012. Furthermore, he is the visionary behind the Chest Pain Unit initiative of the German Society of Cardiology and currently presides as the Chair of the certification committee for Chest Pain Units.
